Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
