In the early hours of Saturday morning, reports emerged of major blasts rocking Tehran, following claims from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preventative military action.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of dense smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the city.
“The type of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency stated, though it did not immediately provide additional information.
Context: Rising Strains and Prior Developments
This event occurs against a background of severely escalated strains in the Middle East. Key events leading up to this strike include:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of American warships in the region, featuring the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with indications of further discussions planned.
- Public Statements: Before the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. Officials dismissed claims about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation remains fluid, with additional reports anticipated as events unfold.
