US Attack on Caracas Raises Concerns of Future Greenland Acquisition.

The latest US-led strike in Venezuela and the seizure of its president have renewed apprehension regarding Washington's ambitions on the Arctic territory. Supporters of the ex-president's base have reportedly set their sights on the resource-rich island following the events in the southern hemisphere.

Inflammatory Posts and Diplomatic Outrage

Merely a short time after the initiation of the Caracas campaign, a well-known right-wing commentator, who is the spouse of a high-ranking presidential adviser, shared a suggestive map. The picture depicted Greenland covered in the American flag, with the cryptic caption: "COMING."

This blatant suggestion to claim the resource-abundant land, which is a member of the NATO alliance, provoked immediate and strong condemnation from Denmark's representatives.

"We are close allies and should continue to cooperate as such. American security is equally Greenland’s and our security," declared the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "Our nation and the United States collaborate to guarantee security in the North."

The ambassador additionally highlighted that the kingdom had substantially boosted its defence spending this year, allocating a substantial sum specifically for Arctic and North Atlantic security. "And yes, we demand full recognition for the territorial integrity of the our realm," he added.

Administrative Appointments and Geopolitical Interests

The situation were additionally complicated by the recent naming of a Southern governor as a representative to Greenland. The governor had openly thanked the president, saying it was an "honour" to work in a unpaid role to "bring Greenland into the US."

After the events in Venezuela, this envoy praised the president's decisive move, connecting it to the broader "war on drugs."

Ever since assuming office, the American leader has repeatedly unnerved transatlantic allies with his stated desire in Greenland. The island is considered vitally strategic for defence and future resource extraction. It currently houses the northernmost US military base.

Leaving the Door Open to Military Action

In a significant television appearance, the leader refused to exclude the resorting to military force to gain control of Greenland. This position comes amid intensifying great-power rivalry in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He described Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll value them... But we need that for international security."

Growing Friction and Indigenous Resistance

In response to this persistent "drumbeat" of threats, Danish intelligence service took the unprecedented step last month of classifying the United States as a "potential threat."

The leaders of both Greenland delivered a unified and forceful statement: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not take over other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland reveals a complex sentiment. While a vast majority of the territory's inhabitants seek self-rule from Denmark, there is also scant appetite to become part of the United States. The territory has had the option to seek sovereignty for many years.

Expert Assessment: A Plausible Threat?

Military analysts are increasingly reconsidering the likelihood of such a action. One thinktank director focusing in military analysis admitted she had previously discounted the rhetoric but was "now not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to station a few hundred or a few thousand troops on Greenland, and it's unclear to me which power could intervene about it," she concluded.
