New research reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these drugs should be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
